Prepare Brick Surface: Sand or waterblast the paint, dirt, or oils so that you have a raw, fresh, porous (but not crumbling) surface. Some masons say that this is an adequate surface for accepting a scratch coat. Install Metal Lath: Metal lath is an acceptable surface that will allow you to apply veneer to brick.
Raw Materials. Natural clay minerals, including kaolin and shale, make up the main body of brick. Small amounts of manganese, barium, and other additives are blended with the clay to produce different shades, and barium carbonate is used to improve brick's chemical resistance to the elements.
Inspections and Reports. This occurs as the salt crystals adhere to the brickwork and are absorbed into the bricks. During rain the crystal will expand and then push the outer surface of the brickwork away and cause surface deterioration. Once the harden surface of the brickwork is lost, then the rate of deterioration of brickwork will accelerate.
Crumbling Brick. When the wall is dry, apply a foundation sealer to everything you've exposed. Cover the soil with landscape fabric and backfill the trench with ¾inch stone, which promotes drainage and allows movement of the soil during freezing weather. From the way it's crumbling, I'd guess that the brick was originally pointed with lime mortar.
